Hepplewhite [provides] a rich, varied musical bed for the action. And it's amazing how well he manages to do this with nine instrumentalists. Everything seems to be constantly moving, tirelessly. His music is lively, constantly on the move. He nimbly creates one climax after the next...

Hepplewhite never patronises the children with rumpty-tumpty Jack and Jill tunes, but instead gives them sinuous music of great sophistication, choosing instrumentation that embellishes the sense of wonder being created on stage.
